Cast Iron Rods

Grey Cast Iron Rod.

Grey cast iron is the most popular form of cast iron. Carbon precipitates out into coal flakes during manufacturing into pearlite. It is more ductile and combines than white cast iron. However, it still poses a challenge to prospective fuse as the coal flakes within grey cast iron.

Malleable Iron

White iron can be further manufactured into malleable iron through a process of heat treatment. An elongate program of heating and cooling, results in the breaking of the iron carbide molecules, releasing free coal molecules into the iron. Different cooling rates, and the gain of alloys, produce a malleable iron with a microcrystalline structure.

DUCTILE IRON ROD

Ductile iron, or nodular iron, contains special properties through the addition of magnesium into the alloy. The presence of magnesium causes the graphite to form in a shape as opposed to the flakes of gray iron. Composition control is very vital in the manufacturing process. Small quantities of degradation such as sulfur and oxygen act with the magnesium, influencing the shape of the graphite molecules. Unlike grades of ductile iron are found by handling the microcrystalline structure around the coal spheroid. This is pulled off through the casting process, or through heat treatment, as a downstream processing step.
