RAJUL STEEL CENTRE
Shims
Shims are manufactured from various materials and are used in the manufacturing of large equipment. A material that is thin and is used to fill the space in an area can be called shims. For example: To construct door jams and windows, construction shims are often used. Shims are also famous for creating manufactured products from raw materials. For example: To level out a piece of cardboard that is to be used in making a cupboard or bed.
Existence or beginning of shims!
-
In ancient times shims were called as “thin piece of wood” as it was used to level an object or separate two objects. When later different materials came into existence shims were known as “a material used for support or joining.”

Forms of Shims
-
There are many forms in which a shim is available for various projects. Rajul steel centre specialises in the following forms of shims: -
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Variable Shims
-
The two types of shims that make up variable shims are lengthening and shortening shims. These shims are used to change the effective length of shoulder bolts, also known as stripper bolts, in punch and die assemblies that make washers from flat metal strips. Shortening shafts or bolts to the desired lengths is less expensive when the effective length may be changed.

-
Feeler gauges
-
Feeler gauges, also known as leaf gauges, are thin spring steel gauges that are precision produced. Feeler gauges are used to accurately measure mechanical assemblies with extremely tight tolerances.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Tool Wrap
-
Tool wrap is a type of cut-to-fit sheeting that is often made from thin stainless-steel rolls that can be easily cut using heavy-duty scissors or snips. To provide a barrier during the heat-treating process, tool wrap is often folded into an envelope encasing the tools. This prevents contamination of the tool, which can lead to scaling and decarburization.

Tubular Spacers
-
Tubular spacers, also known as standoffs or compression limiters, are an unthreaded spacer that supports assembled components that are held together by screws, rivets, or rods. Tubular spacers are frequently used to replace cut-off tubing, ferrules, grommets, rivets, and machined items as standoffs, bushings, tension sleeves, compression limiters, axles, and pins.

Main Four categories or kinds of Shims
-
Shims are important in many industries for their various applications. However, shims are always not equal and varying shims may serve vivid purposes. Below given is a description of 4 differing kinds of shims: -
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Traditional Shims
-
Shims are thin pieces of fabric that are needed to fill in small spaces or gaps. Typically, a solid piece of metal will be a spacer, washer, or filler. Traditional shims are often used or applied to the projects as pre-planned parts. They’re not adjustable and are designed with specific thicknesses, lengths, widths, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Edge Bond (Adjustable) Shims
-
Inaccuracies are the main purpose for this shim. Technicians using them will attain one or three layers to catch up on machining errors, whereas other products are designed into the assembly, so they remove layers. Shims are designed to suit certain spaces, which are designed for adjustment but are a part of the assembly package. The foil layers are then put into jogs, and therefore the edges are glued with specific aerospace-quality glue. After that, the layers are peeled off to create the length of the assembly to the precise specifications.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Tapered Shims
-
When surfaces have a taper on them, tapered shims are needed to slot in between the opposite parts. They’ll make the joining tight by pushing apart the pieces, and sometimes they’ll push into the assembly, with the remainder of the shim designed into the assembly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Adjustable Shims (Peelable shims)
-
These shims have flat, three-dimensional layers that are glued together so the technician can peel away layers not needed to urge to the precise right thickness. Typically, they’re 2,000th-3,000th of an inch thick

Hardness of Shims
-
Shims are available in soft, hard, quarter hard, half hard, spring hard etc hardness.
